Quorum Saving Law Passed For Local Option
The 2006 General Court passed an amendment to the Public Meeting Law to help munipal boards avoid quorum problems when a member misses a hearing. The new law, An Act Further Regulating Meetings of Municipal Boards must first be adopted by a municipality (town meeting or city council) for one or more boards in order to take effect. Once adopted, it would let a board member missing one hearing to catch up and rejoin the voting quorum by reading or listening to the record for the missed meeting. Boards and commissions should encourage their mayor, city council or selectboard to adopt this new provision as soon as possible as it provides a means to improve your process for reaching decisions on applications coming before you.
