Gridlocked on Greylock? Tourism officials suggest venturing off the beaten path

If you’ve ever been stuck in gridlock on Mount Greylock — especially on weekends and holidays when the summit is jammed with sightseers — it may be no surprise that tourism officials are concerned about overcrowding in the Berkshires.

Earlier this year, Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and their partner, 1 Berkshire  — the state-designated regional tourism council for the county — created a companion website, www.berkshiresoutside.org, to the go-to official online tourism tool, www.berkshires.org.

In addition to Mount Greylock State Reservation, which includes the state’s highest peak (3,491 feet), Bascom Lodge and the Veterans War Memorial Tower, other destinations prone to “over-tourism” include Kennedy Park in Lenox and Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, said Laura Brennan, assistant director and economic development program manager of the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission.
