Here’s how a blight designation could help Adams fix roads, sidewalks and drainage issues

ADAMS — Deteriorating buildings, roads and sidewalks in need of repair and bridges falling apart.

These are among Adams’ infrastructure needs, which a new designation could help the town address.

At a meeting earlier this month, the Select Board voted to designate the Adams Route 8 Target Area — located at the northern and southern gateways to downtown and in the Summer Street area — as a “blighted and decadent area.”

“CDBG has been a longstanding program, so it’s always helped communities focus on improvements,” said Donna Cesan, Adams interim community development director. “Undertaking improvements to their streets, drainage, public works facilities … It’s a very important program.”

The board’s decision followed a slum and blight report conducted by the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, outlining the town’s infrastructure challenges.
