PITTSFIELD — The Berkshire Flyer is coming back this summer. Whether it continues beyond that is an open question.
At the state level, officials won’t go as far to call the Amtrak service from New York to Pittsfield permanent, or even say if it will return next year. They’re couching its future in its performance this year.
With two seasons in the books — the last one characterized by major delays and low ridership — the Flyer isn’t out of the woods yet. Experts say there’s larger infrastructure problems that need to be addressed — such as traffic jams created by single tracks, and how riders get around once they get to Pittsfield — before the fate of the once-heralded return to rail can be decided.
