PITTSFIELD — Aging residents often face a choice: leave home for a more accessible place to live, or stay put in a house that wasn’t built for getting older.

An upcoming seminar aims to offer a third option — modifying the home so they can stay.

The Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, a public organization that helps municipalities plan for the future, is holding a seminar on how residents can age in place. The session will walk homeowners through modifications that make a house more accessible.

“With the housing stock that we have and the kind of the housing crisis that we have, it’s really hard for older folks to find a place to relocate,” said Brett Roberts, principal planner at the regional planning commission. “So the place that they’re going to age is the home that they have now.”
