Pittsfield’s Durant Park Splash Pad Gets $200K Boost

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Durant Park splash pad project has been boosted by more than $200,000 in state funds.

A 700-square-foot outdoor water attraction is planned for the 2.1-acre park at 30 John St. City officials hope to have it operational by summertime.

On Tuesday, the City Council accepted $215,980 from Berkshire Regional Planning Commission to install a stormwater treatment system on Francis Avenue and a splash pad at the park. BRPC has agreed with the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness program to administer the funds.

Home Modification Loan Program Assistance Available in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Help is available for residents with mobility difficulties who want to stay in their homes.

Michaela Grady, a housing planner with Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, gave a presentation at the City Council’s Tuesday meeting on the Home Modification Loan Program that provides zero-interest loans to make homes more accessible to aging and disabled residents.

A BRPC representative will be North Adams Public Library on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 1 to 4 and Friday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to provide technical assistance filling out an application to the program.

Pittsfield report highlights urgent need for pedestrian safety upgrades on Dalton Avenue

PITTSFIELD — A citizen initiative prompted by the death of 87-year-old Luis Chin, who died after being struck while crossing Dalton Avenue, has produced a report calling for more pedestrian protections and lower speeds along the busy street.

“It is imperative that we take lessons learned from why this crash took place and take steps to prevent another from happening,” says the report, presented to the City Council last month and referred to the city Department of Public Works. “This is to both honor the life of Luis and to make sure that no further lives are lost unnecessarily.”

Lanesborough Considers Partnership for Opioid Settlement Funds

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Select Board plans to partner with the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and Northern Berkshire Community Coalition for the management of its opioid settlement funds.

Last week, members voted to begin discussion about a memorandum of agreement with BRPC that would facilitate the exploration of programs through NBCC, as well as regional partnerships.

Williamstown Planning Board Moves Forward With Mixed-Use Proposal

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Planning Board last week decided to move forward with an initiative to encourage mixed-use development, even though it is not quite sure how that initiative will be manifested in the zoning bylaw.
