Why is it important?

BRPC addresses challenges that affect both the Berkshire region and individual communities. Issues such as community development, transportation, the economy, environment, energy, public health, housing, and land use often cross municipal boundaries and create interconnected challenges. BRPC’s regional scope allows the Commission to support solutions that benefit the region while responding to local needs and fostering collaborative approaches across communities.

BRPC also serves as a united voice for the Berkshires when working with state and federal agencies. The Commission engages the public through outreach and input opportunities where community members can share their experiences. Public feedback on study results and proposed plans is an integral part of BRPC’s planning process.

What BRPC Interns Do

  • Preparing report drafts, website content, outreach materials, or other communications.
  • Attending meetings with municipal officials, community organizations and regional partners.
  • Supporting outreach and engagement activities by tabling at community events.
  • Collecting and organizing information for plans and projects.
  • Assisting with project coordination and administrative tasks.
  • Participating in fieldwork such as site documentation, photography, or data collection.

What Former Interns Have Said

Past interns often describe their experience at BRPC as an opportunity to contribute to real projects while gaining insight into how regional initiatives take shape across Berkshire County. Through their work, interns build practical skills in research, communication, data analysis, and project coordination, while learning how planning and public initiatives move from ideas to implementation.

Interns also highlight the opportunity to work both independently and alongside staff across multiple program areas, interact with community partners and municipal officials, and gain a better understanding of how regional organizations collaborate to address shared challenges. Many note improvements in professional skills such as writing, time management, communication, and using common workplace tools.
